Several people in my class are muslims. Sometimes they talk to each other in Arabic (I think), and I worry that I cannot understand what they are saying. Because of all the fuss in media about ISIS and so on, should I be worrying about my safety?

You should not. Traditional Islam is a peaceful religion; although it has its own peculiarities which we, as western people, cannot understand quite well, Islam is not aimed at killing faithless and/or non-Muslim people. It is true, however, that there are many radical religious groups in Islam, and even fanatic terrorists, but common Muslims do not support them, believing that radicals only spoil the reputation of Islam. If you want to learn more, you can open any Islamic website. It is just a very different culture, with its own laws and rules; unfortunately, because of the terroristic groups such as Al Qaeda or ISIS the world sees Islam as an offensive and radical culture. Bad reputation in the western world is probably the only true flaw of Islam. So, unless you notice some obvious signs of danger or bad intentions, you can feel safe.
