Scene Two

Although it’s daytime, the velvet curtains are closed in the living room. The room is richly lit by an elegant chandelier. There is nothing but ash in the fireplace. Paul and Claire enter the room talking.

PAUL

Can you imagine? Ten days in jail for shooting one bird!

(both sit down on the sofa.)

CLAIRE

That’s terrible, my dear. You have never hunted before, right?

PAUL

Never.

CLAIRE

So why did you do this?

PAUL

The day was so nice and warm. I felt happy and relaxed. Emma was so playful and charming…

(A dreamy smile comes across his face.)

CLAIRE

Emma? Who is Emma???

PAUL

A dog. Tom’s dog.

CLAIRE

Emma is his wife, not his dog!

PAUL

I was also surprised! They both have the same name, can you imagine? However, Emma has always been a calm and quiet woman…

CLAIRE

So, she is a woman, after all!!!

PAUL

I meant, so calm and quiet that a woman can easily handle it.

(He wipes the sweat off the forehead.)

CLAIRE

What happened next?

PAUL

Suddenly, this stupid bird flew out of the bushes. Emma yelled: “Shoot, PAUL, shoot!”

CLAIRE

Dogs can’t yell! Stop fooling around!

PAUL

Oh, dear! I meant that she, erm… it barked so loudly that I almost could hear a human voice.
